Where will we go on Zafira?

A sunset cruise in Costa Rica is a 'must-do'. It offers you a unique way to experience the beauty of this country from another perspective. The vibrant blues & greens of the water, combined with the seasonal colors of the land, offer you a view you can't get anywhere from land.

But where exactly will you go on a sunset cruise with Zafira? We always say 'it depends'. We rely on ocean conditions and weather, and, on private tours, we consider where you are staying to help take you to a beach you may not find otherwise. And on full private days, you might check off more than one!

Setting Sail: The Beginning of Your Sunset Adventure

Your sunset cruise with Zafira usually starts from our meeting location in Potrero. A member of our staff will greet you and go over some details with you before boarding. Then it's smooth sailing from there!

Coastal Views and Hidden Coves

One of the highlights of a sunset cruise with Zafira is the chance to view the rugged coastline and explore secluded coves that are often inaccessible by land. Along your journey, we'll highlight some points of interest while searching for marine life, and then tuck into a cove for snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, and 'flinking' if that's your thing!

Our Destinations

Here's where the 'It Depends' comes into play. If you are joining us for a private tour and are staying at The Westin, W Hotel, JW Marriott, or an AirBNB in Flamingo, Potrero, Las Catalinas, we want to take you to a location you might not find on your own, can't access from the road, and isn't outside your front door.

We also take into consideration the local conditions and weather. Since we sail rain or shine, the protection the coves offer, the clarity of the water, and the energy of the ocean are all considered by the Captain as the best destination for that day. Which can also mean that each tour is different! Here are the areas we visit on Zafira:

Play Minas - Aptly named because it was once mined for iron and gold! While this calm, white-sand beach can be accessed by land, you need to make sure it's the right time of year in the proper vehicle! You'll notice from the ocean that the terrain is a bit rugged, so we obviously think the best way to visit is by boat!

Guacamaya - According to Essential Costa Rica, "this is a beautiful beach with soft waves and a coastline full of vegetation. This place is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, rest and relaxation. It’s also excellent for hiking and taking great photos". With the ability to do it all on Zafira, we couldn't agree more!

Zapotal - Tucked into a valley just North of Las Catalinas, Zapotal is a calm, large cove with easy waters to snorkel in. It's also an easy swim to shore to explore the light grey sand beach. It's mountainous and lush from the water, a true quiet gem. For now, the road in is unpaved, so getting there by boat is the most desirable way to go.

Playa Pirates - As the local legend goes, Playa Pirates was the hiding spot for infamous pirates like Captain Morgan and Sir Francis Drake, ready to target Spanish shipping boats routing through the Pacific. It's noted for good snorkeling, artisanal fishing... and some still believe there is treasure buried there!

The Brumel Islands - Located a few miles off Potrero, the Brumels offer guests clear blue waters and, during low tides, a small beach. Currents can be a little strong around the Islands, but visiting them on a good day offers some fun snorkeling and wildlife sightings.

Danta / Dantita - While both are accessible by car and foot, by boat is simply the best! Some travelers say the waters offer pool-like conditions, making it safe for all levels of swimmers & easy for beginner-level snorkelers. Danta is located at the base of Las Catalinas, and Dantita is just around a small mountain, making it a little more secluded for beachgoers.

Playa Amor / Honeymoon Beach - Also locally known as Playa Celeste, this white sand beach is extremely popular for sunset cruises. While we go there, it's not the top of our list because it can get busy with other boats. It is one cove that is really difficult to get to by land, but it offers nice snorkeling opportunities and calm, clear waters. Zafira goes here when conditions are less than desirable at the other options.

The Return Journey

The sail back is why most people book the sunset tour - to enjoy the kaleidoscope of colors as the sun goes down over the Pacific! This is when all things settle down, and there are no more cares for that short period of time, except maybe "Will the Green Flash happen this time?" Then the sun hits the horizon, and our disco lights illuminate the rest of the ride back to Potrero!
