Zafira Catamaran - for the Fun-Loving and Discerning Travelers.

Every traveler has preferences, especially when exploring beautiful destinations like Costa Rica. One evening, we were selling our fishing and catamaran tours at a local market, and a potential customer asked us, "What sets you apart from the other catamarans out there?" GREAT question!

Quick back story: In 2019, we had the opportunity with some friends to purchase a fishing panga. We did, we named it Boomerang, and started to charter it out. Then came Victory, and then in 2022, Zafira. We've all been on catamaran tours locally and in other countries, so when we took over the operations, our first thought was, "What do WE want on these tours?" And asked friends what they want. We took our experiences & the feedback, changed the program, and offer guests a personally curated Costa Rican sailing experience. If you read the other post, "You’ve booked your trip with Zafira, now what?", you'll have a good idea of what to expect - but it's more than that.

When you have the chance to visit other countries like Jamaica, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic, taking a sunset cruise is a must-do, much like here. But we want to make sure you know you are in Costa Rica and on Zafira! How do we do that?

1) Crew. Everyone is going to tell you they have the best crew. And we do. Their experience out on the water is immeasurable. It took us time to bring together the right team, and it's typically the first comment we get about guests' experience, and you'll find it in our reviews. We also staff according to the number of guests aboard each tour, so you know your group and guests of all ages are safe and attended to.

2) Food. Fresh produce is ordered and delivered for each trip, our crew makes it on board each morning, so you know the quality is something else, and it's not made days in advance or catered. Our chicken pinchos are glazed with a one-of-a-kind passion fruit BBQ sauce and grilled on board while you are exploring the water. Ask anyone about our proprietary bean dip, and you might book a trip just to be able to eat that!

3) Beverages. Natural, locally made juices, limited soft drinks, and not a batch cocktail to be found. Do you want your freshly made margaritas frozen, on the rocks, or non-alcoholic? Done. Mojito with real mint muddled? Done. Rum Punch with local mixed berry juice? You got it. We offer the three national beers (Imperial, Imperial Silver, Pilsen) and the non-alcoholic option, Imperial Cero, because you're in Costa Rica and should be drinking their beer!

4) Location. Zafira will change destinations based on the weather, water conditions, and sometimes group consensus. We don't leave the mooring in Potrero and head to the same cove each trip. For comfort and safety, we don't like all the guests swimming on top of each other, or where everyone's music is competing to be heard. So we do something different. We are also very lucky that we have a lot of repeat clients, and they don't want to do the same thing each trip. Our Captain has the authority to choose the best location for that day based on the conditions and the group, tailoring the experience each time.

Ultimately, it all comes down to preference and personal expectations. But if you're looking to compare manzanas to manzanas, the above items are really what people consider (and price point, of course.) On Zafira, there are also things you may not see, but you know it's different. Our crew likes to sail, so when the wind is right (and sometimes when it's not), the sails are up! To help reduce waste, our cups are made from recycled bottles and are reusable, we have a Soda Stream on board, and we use biodegradable plates. We have fun, individual floats, we flink, and throw BOMBAS!

We can't say for sure that the person who asked us the question at the market booked a trip with us, but if you've been in the Potrero Bay, we're guessing you've seen Zafira come back in after sunset!
